David Reid of The Birtenshaw Group has been honoured with the Heroes of Industry 2026 Award for Social Entrepreneurship & Business Leadership, recognising his commitment to transforming lives, developing people and setting higher standards across specialist education and care.
The recognition celebrates a leadership approach built around social purpose and continuous improvement. As a social enterprise, The Birtenshaw Group has no shareholders, with profits reinvested into enhancing existing services and developing new ones. At the centre of its work is a commitment to transforming the lives of children and young adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), while creating an environment in which the people supporting them can build secure and rewarding careers.

For David, the two are closely connected. Supporting children and young adults effectively also means investing in the employees responsible for delivering that support.
“My primary goal is to transform the lives of children and young adults with special educational needs and disability and to transform the lives of those who support them by providing secure employment, decent wages, quality training and career progression opportunities,” David said.
This philosophy is reflected throughout The Birtenshaw Group and its wide range of services, which include special education schools, a specialist college, children’s homes, young adult support tenancies, an enrichment service, hydrotherapy centres, allied health services and transport services.
The organisation’s vision is to improve the quality of life of everyone it supports, helping individuals become confident and independent members of their communities. Its approach is underpinned by “ordinary life principles”, with the belief that people with disabilities should have access to the same social and learning opportunities as others and be supported to fulfil their individual potential.
Rather than becoming distracted by uncertainty surrounding the future of the care and special needs education sectors, David focuses on the areas where he believes meaningful change can be achieved. He acknowledges that both sectors are frequently surrounded by negativity, but instead of worrying about developments beyond his control, his priority is to continually improve the services he leads.
By striving to make those services an exemplar for others, David hopes The Birtenshaw Group can positively influence the wider sector and demonstrate what can be achieved when organisations set ambitious expectations for themselves.
This approach extends to industry standards. Rather than simply seeking to remain ahead of existing benchmarks, David believes that many current standards and expectations within the sector are too low. The Birtenshaw Group therefore focuses on establishing its own high standards of practice and success, with the aim of creating an example that others can emulate.
A significant part of achieving those standards is investment in people. The organisation has developed a strong culture of continuous professional development, with training and career progression playing an important role in helping employees grow as professionals.
The Birtenshaw Group runs more than 60 courses in-house, providing employees with extensive opportunities to strengthen their skills and knowledge. Team members are also supported in undertaking external training where it can contribute to their professional development and enhance the work of the organisation.
For David, careers within specialist education and care can offer an extraordinary sense of purpose, but he is equally clear about the commitment they require.
“If it is the right sector for you, it is more of a vocation than a job. If that is the case, each day can be filled with joy and the sense of reward and satisfaction is immense.”
That understanding also shapes the advice David would give to anyone considering entering the profession. He encourages people to be certain that they are looking for a vocation rather than simply a job, recognising that working within the sector can be both emotionally and physically demanding.
He also encourages newcomers to remain curious and think independently. Length of experience, in his view, should never automatically be taken as evidence that something is being done well. Those entering the profession should be prepared to ask questions, check practices for themselves and continue learning rather than simply accepting established ways of working.
His final piece of advice is equally practical: avoid workplace politics and gossip. David regards both as an unnecessary use of time and energy that could instead be directed towards professional development, supporting colleagues and, most importantly, delivering better outcomes for the people who rely on the service.
This emphasis on purpose, curiosity and professional standards reflects the wider mission of The Birtenshaw Group. Through person-centred approaches built on respect, innovation and sustainability, the organisation aims to empower people to live fulfilling lives while responding to the changing needs of disabled people.
Continuous improvement remains fundamental to that mission. The organisation seeks not only to support more people but also to achieve outstanding standards across every area of its work, ensuring that growth never comes at the expense of the quality and individuality of the support provided.
David’s recognition through the Heroes of Industry 2026 Award for Social Entrepreneurship & Business Leadership reflects a model of leadership in which business success and social responsibility are not treated as separate ambitions. By reinvesting in services, investing in employees and continually challenging expectations around what excellent specialist education and care should look like, The Birtenshaw Group demonstrates the wider potential of social enterprise.
The award also recognises the importance of leadership that looks beyond immediate organisational success. David’s ambition is not simply for The Birtenshaw Group to perform well, but for its work to provide an example capable of positively influencing standards throughout the sector.
Through secure employment, decent wages, extensive training and meaningful opportunities for career progression, the organisation’s social impact reaches both the individuals receiving its services and the professionals who dedicate their careers to supporting them.
At the same time, its commitment to ordinary life principles ensures the people at the heart of its services remain the central focus. By promoting independence, confidence, opportunity and community participation, The Birtenshaw Group continues working towards a future in which children and young adults with SEND are supported to fulfil their potential.
The Heroes of Industry Awards recognise individuals whose leadership, commitment and contribution are making a meaningful difference within their industries and communities. David Reid’s recognition celebrates a career focused not only on transforming lives today, but on raising expectations for what specialist education, care and socially responsible leadership can achieve in the future.
