To celebrate Nationwide Fleet Services’ recent Lifetime Achievement Award, we sat down with the team to learn more about their journey, the challenges they’ve overcome, and their vision for the future.
Q: How did you start the business?
A: The opportunity to start NFS came about in 2019 when the holding company I previously worked for went into administration. The division I headed was successful, and, along with my partner and FD, we had the chance to purchase the business from the administrators.
Q: Why did you see a gap in the market, and what makes you different?
A: To be very fair, I didn’t initially see the gap. I am fortunate that two people identified the opportunity in the 1990s to work with car fleets using independent suppliers rather than the equities. I worked my way along after joining and became part of the journey.
Q: What did you find most difficult, and how did you overcome this challenge?
A: There are probably two difficult aspects of what we do. Firstly, NFS is a small business operating alongside and working with much larger organisations, such as the tyre manufacturers and the market leader in car fleets, Kwik Fit. This means we always have to remain mindful of our position in the industry. Secondly, maintaining strong working relationships with our supplier network is crucial. Without our network, NFS cannot function. And without NFS, these suppliers would likely lose access to the work they enjoy and are skilled at. NFS provides the umbrella, the system, and the access – while the suppliers handle the physical side of the job.
Q: What are your strengths as a Director?
A: One of my key strengths is having a comprehensive understanding of every part of the job we are involved with, having worked my way up from the night controller to where I am now. This experience has given me valuable insights into the inner workings of the business. Additionally, I recognise how delicate and essential the relationship is with both our customers and suppliers, and I prioritise maintaining these connections with care and respect.
Q: The Future: What can we expect from you?
A: I am focused on continued growth, both within the business and for the people involved. I want to encourage our senior management team to pursue continuous improvement, not only to support me but also as a key part of their own development. This approach will ensure that we remain adaptable, innovative, and ready to meet the challenges ahead.
