Rachel Hicks, founder of Rachel’s Driving School, has been named a recipient of the Inspirational Women in Business Award 2026, recognising her resilience, dedication, and long-standing commitment to helping others gain confidence and independence through driving.
Rachel’s journey into the driving industry began in 2006, when family commitments led her to pursue a new career path. With a desire to support her family while building a flexible and meaningful profession, she retrained as a driving instructor.
“I decided I needed a career that worked around my family,” Rachel explains. “Becoming a driving instructor gave me the opportunity to do that while helping others at the same time.”

Her passion for helping people has been a defining factor in her success. Coming from a background in nursing, Rachel brought with her a natural sense of care, patience, and understanding, qualities that have shaped her approach to teaching.
“I like people, I like helping people, and I love seeing them improve themselves,” she says.
Throughout her career, Rachel has remained focused and resilient in the face of challenges. Her approach is practical and grounded, addressing issues early and maintaining organisation to prevent problems from escalating.
“I dug deep, dealt with situations as they arose, and made sure things didn’t escalate,” she reflects.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her work is helping learners overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Watching students pass their driving test, particularly those who have struggled along the way, is something she finds incredibly fulfilling.
“I love seeing people pass their tests, especially when they’ve found something difficult and then finally get it right. That achievement means everything.”
Beyond her work as a driving instructor, Rachel is also actively involved in supporting mental health initiatives. She has been sponsoring the football club Kick Out The Stigma for the past two years, contributing to an organisation that supports both men and women through mental health awareness and community engagement.
Among her proudest achievements are the awards she has received throughout her career, with the Inspirational Women in Business Award 2026 standing out as particularly meaningful.
“This award really took me by surprise,” Rachel says. “It’s exciting, rewarding, and it’s finally sunk in. It makes me proud to see my hard work recognised and to know I’ve achieved the goals I set out to do.”
Rachel credits much of her confidence and business mindset to her father, who played a key role in shaping her outlook.
“He taught me how to value myself and my business. I learned so much from him.”
When asked if she ever considered giving up, Rachel’s answer is clear. She remained committed throughout her journey and continues to look ahead, with no immediate plans to slow down.
Her advice to other women considering a similar path is straightforward and encouraging: do your research, find reputable training, and believe in your own ability.
“Work hard, understand the pros and cons, and show that you’re capable.”
This award marks a significant milestone in Rachel’s journey, recognising a career built on perseverance, compassion, and a genuine passion for helping others succeed.
