Amando Brown, Founder and Director of BESTuition, has been awarded the prestigious Influential Man in Business 2026 for Tailored Tuition, recognising his extraordinary commitment to transforming the lives of young people through personalised education, unwavering resilience, and innovative support for students who often fall outside traditional educational pathways.
The award celebrates a journey that is as inspiring as it is remarkable. What began as a promising career in policing evolved into a mission-driven educational enterprise after a life-changing accident altered the course of Brown’s future.
In 1994, Brown joined the police force, a career he believed would last a lifetime. However, in March 1998, after completing a 10-hour shift, his life changed dramatically when a car travelling the wrong way down a one-way street collided head-on with his stationary motorbike.

The devastating accident resulted in multiple fractures and serious injuries, including damage to his spine, pelvis, shoulder, knees, wrist and foot, as well as severe concussion. Over the following four years, he underwent numerous operations, including spinal fusion surgery and a radial partial fusion of his left wrist. He was medically retired from the police in 2002 and registered disabled for approximately eight years.
Rather than allowing those circumstances to define him, Brown embarked on a new chapter. Supported by his wife, he completed an Art degree despite suffering severe memory loss and deteriorating eyesight following the accident. Defying medical advice that suggested he should only undertake part-time sedentary work, he qualified as a teacher in 2007 and began teaching Art and Design in secondary and sixth-form education.
During his teaching career, Brown quickly discovered a natural ability to connect with students who had additional needs. This understanding would eventually become the foundation of BESTuition.
“In 2014, BESTuition was birthed as a sole trading business. Birthed out of a parental request regarding two teenage children needing additional support.”
The organisation began by supporting two siblings, one of whom went on to complete a degree in veterinary nursing, while the other continues to receive support from BESTuition today. In 2019, the organisation became a limited company and has since grown into a respected provider of tailored educational support, serving students who have often been overlooked, misunderstood or failed by traditional systems.

Now approaching two decades in education, Brown attributes much of his success to consistency, sacrifice and a deep commitment to serving students.
“I always believe that success requires commitment and sacrifice. No dream is ever realised without commitment and success comes at a price. There is always a payoff.”
His philosophy centres around what he calls “stickability”, remaining consistent, insistent and persistent so that young people feel safe, supported and confident enough to succeed themselves.
This commitment extends beyond teaching methods. BESTuition places listening at the centre of everything it does. Brown believes that while many educators spend significant time talking, genuine progress comes from understanding the needs of students, families and stakeholders. By ensuring everyone feels heard, held and understood, the organisation has developed a highly responsive approach that reflects the realities of those it serves.
Brown also credits his daily discipline and focus as essential factors in his achievements. Maintaining a manageable task list, avoiding distractions and remaining committed to long-term goals have helped him navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and education alike. For men considering a career in education or tailored tuition, Brown offers straightforward advice: “Go for it!”
He believes many students are actively seeking positive male role models, father figures and trustworthy men of principle who can provide guidance and encouragement. At the same time, he emphasises that anyone entering the profession must genuinely love education and be prepared to advocate for students who require the greatest levels of support.
One of the aspects of his work that brings him the greatest fulfilment is witnessing students exceed expectations. Many of the young people BESTuition supports have previously been written off, ignored, let down or misunderstood. Seeing them achieve outcomes they never believed possible remains one of the most rewarding aspects of his role.
Among the many memorable experiences during his career, one stands out deeply. BESTuition had the privilege of supporting a terminally ill student for several months before the young person sadly passed away. Following the student’s death, the family wrote to thank the organisation for providing quality therapeutic education during one of the most important periods of their child’s life. The experience reinforced the profound impact education can have far beyond academic achievement.
Looking back, Brown regards transforming an idea into a thriving business as one of his proudest accomplishments. Over the past 12 years, BESTuition has evolved from a dream into a successful organisation that has welcomed family members, friends and dedicated professionals into what Brown describes as an extended family culture.
While many business advisers caution against working with relatives and friends, BESTuition has embraced the opposite approach, creating an environment where collaboration, trust and shared purpose flourish.
The journey has not been without challenges. Brown openly acknowledges that there have been numerous occasions when it would have been easier to abandon entrepreneurship and work for someone else. In particular, 2025 proved exceptionally difficult, with stakeholder disappointments, staff departures and financial pressures creating significant obstacles.
Despite these challenges, Brown remained focused on the original vision that inspired BESTuition.
“What kept me going was my original dream of helping just a few students and seeing them flourish.”
His determination is perhaps best summed up by one of his guiding beliefs: “Anything worth having is worth fighting for. Diamonds are formed under immense pressure.”
Looking ahead, the organisation remains committed to continuously improving the services it already provides while exploring opportunities for future international expansion beyond the United Kingdom.
Receiving the Influential Man in Business 2026 award has further strengthened Brown’s confidence in the value of the work being undertaken by his team.
“This award has given me and my team the assurance that our hard work and commitment is valued. It says, ‘It is inspiring, uplifting and the encouragement we needed to say even as a small fish in a huge pond, we are adding value.'”
Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, Brown has drawn inspiration from several mentors and guiding influences. His faith has remained a constant source of strength, helping him stay grounded while focusing on the wider impact of his work and the ripple effects that can begin with a single act of support.
He also credits mentor Brian Armstrong for encouraging him from the outset to understand and recognise his own worth and value. Above all, he acknowledges the unwavering support of his wife of 32 years, whose encouragement and belief in his abilities have been instrumental throughout every stage of the journey.
As BESTuition continues to grow and positively influence the lives of students across the UK, this latest recognition serves as a fitting tribute to a leader whose resilience, compassion and commitment have transformed adversity into opportunity and whose impact continues to shape brighter futures for countless young people.
