Emma Ryan, Founder of Petals by Balham, has been recognised with the Influential Woman in Business 2026 – Florist Category, celebrating her dedication, creativity, and leadership within the floral industry.
For Emma Ryan, floristry has always gone far beyond arranging flowers. It is about storytelling, connection, and creating meaningful moments that stay with people long after the occasion has passed.
Her journey into the industry began with a deeply personal experience that shaped both her perspective and the business she leads today.
“I’ve always loved flowers and being around them, but my journey into the industry really began during a deeply personal moment. After a death in the family, I attended the funeral and was struck by how the floral arrangements told the story of his life.”
That moment inspired Emma to create arrangements that carry emotion and meaning. Whether for weddings, funerals, or everyday occasions, each piece created by Petals by Balham is designed to reflect personal stories and lasting memories.

Emma credits much of her success to the support of her family, whose encouragement gave her the confidence to pursue her passion despite early doubts from others. That foundation has shaped the way she runs her business today.
“We treat people like friends, like part of our extended family. We’re there for people’s milestones, and they’re there for ours too.”
Based in Balham, Petals by Balham has become a valued part of the local community, sharing in customers’ most important moments while building strong, lasting relationships. This sense of connection has played a key role in the company’s continued growth and recognition.
Like many entrepreneurs, Emma has faced challenges along the way. Questions around her age and experience could have held her back, but instead became motivation to prove her capability and commitment.
Her perseverance has already been recognised through multiple accolades, including Best Florist at the England’s Business Awards 2025 and several Awards of Excellence across 2025 and 2026, reflecting both the quality of her work and the loyalty of her customers.
Emma’s journey has also shaped the advice she gives to others, particularly women starting their own paths in business.
“Believe in yourself, trust your instincts, and understand that success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built steadily over time.”
One of her proudest achievements is continuing the legacy of the family flower stall, which has been running for 57 years. Preserving that history while evolving the business for the future remains a central focus.
Surviving the financial pressures of the COVID pandemic and emerging stronger stands as another defining milestone, highlighting the resilience and dedication behind the business.
Looking ahead, Emma plans to expand through collaborations with local businesses, creative workshops, and continued involvement in weddings and celebrations, while staying true to the values that have shaped her journey.
Winning the Influential Woman in Business 2026 award has further strengthened her ambition to inspire others, particularly young women and those considering a career change.
At the heart of everything she does is her family, especially her father, whose guidance has played a major role in shaping her work ethic and outlook.
This recognition celebrates not only Emma Ryan’s achievements, but also the passion, resilience, and community spirit behind Petals by Balham as it continues to grow and make an impact.
