In an industry where empathy and endurance walk hand in hand, Emma Roberts, Managing Director of ELR Homecare Ltd, has spent the past decade redefining what it truly means to care. Her recent recognition as an Inspirational Woman in Business stands as a testament to her relentless drive, resilience, and commitment to raising standards in the homecare sector.
Emma’s journey began long before her company was founded. She started her career as a carer, working with several organisations across the region. But what should have been a deeply fulfilling role often left her disheartened. “I had always worked as a carer and I worked for many different companies, some I found that didn’t actually care about the people we were supposed to be looking after,” she shared. “After moving from company to company, I decided I wanted to open my own company and ensure people got looked after properly.”
That defining decision, made one evening at the family home, would change the course of her life. Sitting with her father, she mapped out what would become ELR Homecare Ltd, a company founded on compassion, respect, and genuine human connection. “I sat down with my dad one evening and went through everything with him and started making plans and arrangements,” Emma recalled. “On 13th July 2015, I opened ELR Homecare Ltd.”
From the very beginning, Emma poured her heart and soul into the business. What started as a vision built around care quickly became a respected name in the community, one that clients and families could rely on. “The key ingredients behind my success are determination and hard work,” she said. “I put so much time and effort into getting my business off the ground and making a success of it. You have to be prepared for long hours for it to be able to work. I never stop, but I enjoy it so much, and the difference we make to people’s lives is incredible.”
But success never comes without challenges. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the care sector faced one of its toughest tests in modern history. For Emma and her team, those months demanded courage and compassion in equal measure. “So many of our staff and service users caught COVID, it was a terrible time,” she recalled. “We had a lot of staff off due to the virus but we still had to make sure our service users were cared for. The staff we did have worked tirelessly. I had to send my children to my mom, my brother, and family friends to be looked after while me and the Deputy Manager went out to provide care as we were running on skeleton staff. I’m pleased to say we all got through it. It was very challenging, but due to the hard work and dedication of all our staff, we were able to carry on.”
Her leadership during this time exemplified the resilience that defines ELR Homecare. It was also a reminder that behind every business statistic lies a network of real people, clients, carers, and families, whose wellbeing depends on the strength and vision of those leading the way.
When asked about what motivates her to keep going, Emma’s answer comes effortlessly.
“The best part of this job is knowing we’re making a difference,” she said. “When you see clients happy, comfortable, and safe in their own homes, it makes all the hard work worthwhile. It’s also about looking after our staff, making sure they feel supported and valued, because without them, none of this would be possible.”
It is this balance between compassion and leadership that sets Emma apart. Her advice to aspiring women in business echoes the same strength and perseverance that has carried her through the years. “Don’t give up even when it becomes challenging,” she advises. “Hard work and dedication really do pay off. Stay focused on what you’re trying to achieve. If you believe in yourself like I did, you will succeed.”
Recognition has followed naturally. Over the years, ELR Homecare has earned glowing feedback, awards, and the trust of countless families, achievements that Emma holds close to her heart. “I am really proud of all the positive feedback and the lovely compliments we’ve received over the years, and also for the number of awards we have won,” she said.
The Inspirational Woman in Business Award feels especially meaningful.
“I am over the moon to have received this award,” Emma shared. “It’s a validation of the work we’ve put in over the past ten years and shows just how strong our business has become. Since announcing it on social media, we’ve seen increased interest and even welcomed new clients as a result. It’s had a huge positive impact on us, and I hope it’s the first of many recognitions for the team.”
Despite her achievements, Emma remains grounded and focused on the future.
Expansion is on the horizon, with plans to bring ELR Homecare’s trusted services to new areas. “Next on my journey, I would love to expand into some more areas further afield and maybe open another branch of ELR Homecare,” she said. “I’ve never considered giving up. If you want something enough, you’ll make it work.”
Through every success, one figure continues to inspire her, her late father. “My biggest influence was my dad,” Emma reflected softly. “He encouraged me to start this business and helped me with anything I needed. Sadly, he passed away in 2020, but I know he would have been so proud of how I’ve built it up from nothing to what it is today.”
Ten years on, ELR Homecare stands as more than just a business. It is a reflection of Emma Roberts’ values, compassion, and courage. Her story is one of belief, perseverance, and love for her work, and a shining example of what it means to truly lead by example.
